Networking in Scotland: Breakfast and Dining Clubs

I am in Edinburgh ahead of the GAAPS Actuarial Careers Fair at Heriot Watt. I interviewed an excellent candidate first thing this morning over breakfast and am now working on placing him. I then went to visit a client who has given me international contacts for his organisation around the world.

As usual I have found time for shopping but rather than shoes I am now one skirt up.

At this morning’s meeting I was told about a Faculty meeting that I hadn’t realised was taking place and will now be attending the Faculty meeting and the Scottish actuaries dining club afterwards.

Magical Munich

The journey from Munich Airport to the LIFE / AFIR conference was further than I had expected but was a journey through a magical green landscape and I now understand where childhood fairy-tales come from.

The conference itself is excellent and for the first time ever I have understood how Swiss pensions work – a great tribute to the presenter of that session.

In the evening, the social event was a visit to a beer garden. I was very trepiditious and even managed to miss the coach that had been arranged so I ended up walking. Again it was like a scene out of ‘The Student Prince’ (the operetta).

Very worthwhile!  Very well organised!

Clearly a Shakespearian month for our actuarial recruiters – GAAPS consultant Leena Chakraburtty will be performing next week as Anne Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Come and enjoy an evening of open-air theatre in the Monastery Gardens in Bishops Stortford.

If you need to give the bard an actuarial twist then why not come to asses the risk of deceit.

Bright Lights and Mountains

Cape Town, or the “Mother City”, as it is more affectionately known, is a place where old and new converge – in history, architecture, culture and people.

Cape Town

The city is dominated by Table Mountain, and is on the edge of a peninsula – with mountains, valleys and rivers, and the meeting place of two oceans – the Indian and Atlantic. It is a city of contrast and immense natural beauty, where the pace and bright lights of an urban centre meet the relaxed feel of the ocean, forests and mountains. Cape Town is firmly positioned on the international map and offers a myriad of things to do and places to see, whatever your tastes, inclinations or budget. In essence, it is a gateway to the rest of Southern Africa.

Cape Town - Sea

As the oldest city in South Africa, Cape Town has a cultural heritage spanning more than 300 years. It also has the top five national attractions in South Africa – Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront (which is a superb shopping and holiday experience on a working harbour), Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated), the Cape Town Wine Routes (having some of the world´s best wine farms), and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (on the slopes of Table Mountain).

In terms of business, most companies operate head office functions from Johannesburg (the real economic hub of Southern Africa), with Cape Town as a secondary office location. Cape Town has a very much more relaxed feel than the frenetic pace of Johannesburg, and is preferred by many people for this reason. I visited Cape Town while I was in South Africa for our annual actuarial careers fair at the University of Pretoria, one of South Africa’s leading universities, located in South Africa’s capital city, a half hour drive from Johannesburg.

La Nuit des Actuaires – Party in Paris

Each year, the Kactu’z Association, a not-for-profit organisation established in 2003, hosts an event designed to assemble all members of the French Actuarial Profession in Paris.

Membership of the Kactu’z association includes actuaries at every stage of their career; from young professionals and students of all through to those in the most senior positions. The aim of the evening is to bring together all levels of the actuarial movement in a warm and festive atmosphere.

The yearly event is attracting an ever-growing number of professionals and the next one will take place on Saturday 28th March 2009 from 20:00 – 05:00, in the prestigious west Parisian hall: Le Pavillon Dauphine.

The night begins with a cocktail reception for sponsors of the night and their guests from 20:00 to 22:00, followed by an exciting evening with several halls offering different festivities, shows, presentations and animations.

Don’t miss out on the Night of Actuaries and the opportunity to connect with a large part of the actuarial world and promote the image of your company whilst attending a spectacular gala.

This year, Kactu’Z is focusing on the interaction between sponsors and 3rd year actuarial students by means of:

  • A mailing list in order to facilitate contact with the actuarial students
  • A distinction made between sponsors and students during the cocktail reception.

Sophie Sicard, European consultant, leading GAAPS France, recognises the success and importance of last year’s event:

“It was a perfectly successful evening, both by the choice of the premises as well as the animations, but also by the immense possibility to meet actuaries at all levels. For example, I had the pleasure to exchange a few words with Prof. Carla Angela, president of the Italian Institute of Actuaries, guest of honour for that evening.”

GAAPS Actuarial is proud to be associated with the Parisian event as the only sponsor representing the field of specialised actuarial recruitment. On the night, Sophie will be joined by Lance Randles and Sima Varsani, GAAPS consultants based in London, who will be available to all throughout the night.
